Balance
To balance properly, the large and small muscle groups must work together to make sure the body does not fall over. Finding creative ways to engage your child in the following activities will cultivate her sense of balance.
Here are some ways to support your child’s balance:
Balance beams. Almost anything can be used as a balance beam. Hold your child’s hand if need be, and show her how to bend her knees to drop her center of gravity.
Hopping on one foot. Any reason to encourage your child to hop on one foot is helpful. Some ideas include a hopping race, hopping up stairs, a potato bag race, or playing games like hopscotch.
Skipping. By alternating between doing a double hop on one foot then a double hop on the next, children figure out how keep their balance in the midst of movement. Encourage skipping in games, during family walks and just for fun. This also develops whole-body coordination.
Walking backward. This can be done in conjunction with some of the balance beam ideas, or just by asking your child if she can walk backward from point A to point B.
Simple yoga poses. Doing one to three yoga poses with your child is a great way to support her balance, among other things.
